Introduction

Pssst! Do you have a salt lover in your family?

Do you remove the plates from the dinner table to see a “ring of doom” from the vigorous shaking of the salt shaker?

Uh huh. I see you. I hear you. I am you.

This delicious seasoning came about as I was searching for a way to reduce the salt intake of members of my family.

It started as a form of Gomasio, a Japanese flavoured salt, and then over time morphed into this cheesy, nutty, salty, craaaaazy good seasoning.

I gave some of it to a foodie friend who dubbed it Savoury Crack and said that she was eating it out of the jar with a spoon, so the name stuck.

I love it on pretty much anything that you’d sprinkle salt on but it shines particularly well on poached eggs and avo.

For the vegans out there, this is an amazing substitute for parmesan cheese.

I have a jar of this in my cupboard, ALWAYS.

So, don’t get salty with me.

The recipe

Ingredients

1 cup of sesame seeds
1 tablespoon of sea salt
2 tablespoons of nutritional yeast

Directions

Step 1
Place the sesame seeds in a shallow pan and toast over medium heat until golden brown and smelling incredible.
Step 2
Don’t over brown the seeds though, they will become bitter and that’s not the flavour we’re looking for.
Step 3
Remove from heat and sit aside to cool.
Step 4
Put the salt and nutritional yeast in a bowl and stir to combine.
Step 5
Pour the warm, but not hot, sesame seeds into the bowl and combine well.
Step 6
Using a mortar and pestle, a small food processor or a spice grinder, work in batches to roughly blitz the mix.
Step 7
You don’t want to over process the seeds, you just want to break them up slightly to release those toasty oils into the mixture.
Step 8
Let’s be honest though, if you accidentally over process it, it will still taste fabulous.
Step 9
Store it in a jar in the pantry.
Step 10
Don’t know how long it keeps, mine is always gone well before any use by date.
